Problems with the iPod Touch's January Software Update

January 15, 2008 · 94 Comments

So, after watching today's slightly disappointing Keynote from MacWorld Conference and Expo, I decided to buy, through iTunes, the iPod Touch January Software Update ($19.99 or £12.99). Well, slightly dissapointing really, nothing got installed. I am still waiting on the response to my complaint email. Anybody managed to install it? Its meant to be easy, just buy it and Sync your iTouch, but alas, no luck. EDIT: A comment by sidepodcast below has solved the problem. There was an update for the iTouch that I had to install before installing the application package (to be honest, comparing the sizes of the updates, I think what you buy is simply a license for the software). Thanks sidepodcast!!!

Update this post when you have a solution because I'm going to buy the same update, but if there are any problems...
Thank you for your post! ;-)
  • 2 Mark Drew // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:13 PM

    Dont worry, I shall do!

I mean, I should have waited a couple of days before doing it to be honest, but it had two applications I REALLY want, such as Mail and Notes. Oh well, lesson learned. I shall re update this post.
  • 3 luca mezzalira // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:13 PM

Yes I'm interesting to same apps!
Mail in particular, when you go out for work it will be fantastic have it!

I had the same problem! I bought it and nothing got installed!
  • 5 sidepodcast // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:13 PM

you read the instructions about syncing after download, right?

works like a charm for me. fab update, worth every penny.
  • 6 Matt Woodward // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Same problem here (and yes, I read the instructions about syncing). Bought the thing but no apps show up post-sync. Let us know what you find out, and I'll see about contacting them as well.
  • 7 Matt Woodward // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Change your sync settings to automatic if you have them set to manual--this worked for me.
  • 8 sidepodcast // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

just to check. you downloaded the latest version of iTunes (7.6), then updated the iTouch firmware (1.1.3), then downloaded the new apps and finally synced?

sorry if it's a daft question.

new apps appear the moment the sync finishes and a message box pops up explaining how to move icons around.
  • 9 Mark Drew // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

@sidepodcast: That was the problem, I forgot to do the update before the install.

I am doing an update now and once installed (if it works) I shall update the main post!

    Thanks for the tip!
  • 10 mattJH // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Update your ipods to the newest version (1.1.3) and you'll find that once you have bought the update it will install fine
  • 11 sadalit // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Thank you so much Mark Drew and sidepodcast - we were in despair about not seeing the software update anywhere after purchasing and downloading it. Installing the firmware update (1.1.3) at first produced the scary 1602 error, but unplugging the iPod and then plugging back in allowed us to install everything successfully. Thanks again for this advice.
  • 12 ibnabeeomar // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

i tried this.. i even bought the update twice :( first i bought the upgrade and tried it, didnt work. then i did the big firmware upgrade, bought the upgrade, and synced my ipod but still no new apps :(
  • 13 ibnabeeomar // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

i found another solution on another site.. if you have "manually update" checked, it won't sync correctly. you have to uncheck the box, apply, and then sync (this will probably erase what you have on your ipod though but its the only thing that works)
  • 14 Sean Corfield // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I missed something here... they're *charging* for the software update on the Touch? iPhone users get the update for free...

I love the web clips and customize home pages. The new semi-gps self-location on the maps app is *wonderful*... haven't tried anything else new yet :)
  • 15 AntiArchitect // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I had the same problem - here is the solution:
    1. make sure that the "Manually Manage..." is unchecked
    2. makes sure that the "Synch only checked songs..." is unchecked

It was only after I did both these did the update install at all.

BTW - the update is FANTASTIC (especially the email part)
  • 16 Matte // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

    THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!
I was not so happy until I've read this magical post..The January software update works only with the automatic sync..and with the associated iTunes library.
  • 17 C // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

THANK YOU!!!! I have finally found a answer to this. Yes this solution from AntiArchitect works great.

    1. make sure that the "Manually Manage..." is unchecked
    2. makes sure that the "Synch only checked songs..." is unchecked

You are the best AntiArchitect :)
  • 18 mflinsch // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Solved. I had "Manually manage music and videos" selected. I restored my iPod and used the backup I created to reconfigure it and the new apps failed to appear. I restored again and set it up as a new iPod and this time allowed the default settings to stay, this means letting iTunes automatically manage music. Viola' the apps appear. It looks like having manually manage music and videos checked prior to the installing the January update is the issue. Pity since my library is 60GB and my Touch is inly 8GB. Anyway problem solved.

I do not know whether simply clicking "Manually manage music and videos" in my summary screen and then performing the sync operation would have solved this but I'm pretty sure it would. Would have eliminated the need to do a couple of restores and wait on Apple Care for 20 minutes.
  • 19 Dom // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Do you have ITunes v7.6? I was having trouble installing until i saw you needed that....
  • 20 Ben Gotow // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

This is the first google search result for "iPod touch january software update not working," and it looks like you guys have solved the problem. I also had "Manually manage songs" turned on. Honestly though, I'm a little bit disappointed in having to turn that off. It seems like they should at least specify that it is necessary for the update.

I think it just goes to show the system wasn't tested at all before they released. I mean - it seems like a lot of people use that feature.
  • 21 Gazin // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I can't find the link to buy the update. I'm on the page but no buy link!
  • 22 erlando // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I haven't got any buy link either.. Maybe this update is Mac only (as written in the specs)? That would really suck! :-(
  • 23 erlando // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

ETA: Neither my XP nor Vista iTunes shows any "Buy"-link on the January software update page in the store.
  • 24 Oli // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

will it work with vista? if not are they going to bring out one for windows pc's
  • 25 Sathi // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

If you run into trouble due to not setting iTunes to auto sync, you need to set up as new ipod - complete reinstall.
My situation: I updated iTunes, then updated the iTouch to 1.3.1 and purchased the new features. Of course it did not install and I wasted an hour trying to contact Apple. I realized my iTunes is set to manual sync of the iTouch and corrected that setting but that did not help either. Finally I followed the instructions posted by mflinsch which finally helped. I restored the iTouch and the clean reinstall (not the backup of the old ITouch, but a set up as new iPod) set up the new widgets. Now I have to bring the music and photos back in again but at least I have it working.

I have another problem: My iTouch works great on my personal WLAN but at school we have radius security where we log in to a windows domain account (username/password) to get to the WLAN. How do you do that in iTouch? All I can enter is a password, there is no where to enter the username. Any suggestions?

Thanks Mark Drew for this site!
  • 26 stdanny // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

yeah, i agree that this is the lamest that we have to pay for this update, AND have to restore our iPods JUST for this update to take place. I'm very upset, but look on the bright side, if we all are upset about the cost, then maybe Steve will give us credit to iTunes.

    :)
  • 27 wmayhem // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I also agree it's lame to make us pay for this software upgrade when it's free with any new purchase of the iPod touch.
Especially since they dropped the price of the iPod touch.
By the way, I have a similar issue, but different:
My problem is, I use two computers to add songs & videos to my iPod touch. I purchased the software at my office computer,
but originally had my iPod's calendar, podcasts and contacts sync'ed with my home computer.
I also had Manually manage songs & videos set on. I've since disabled that option, and the Sync only checked... option off,
sync'ed my iPod (poof.. 14 gigs buhbye!).
After the sync was complete, I still didn't see the new software - presumably because I had purchased it on my office
    computer.
My question is this: Is there a way to install the upgrade from home, if you purchased it from the office?
  • 28 qiksand // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Wow I had the exact opposite problem. I purchased the update using my home computer, but Im now in the office trying to update the iPod. No luck. I guess the PC/Mac u used to purchase the software is the only computer authorized to update the iPod. But I am not sure about this. Also my iPod has music from 3 computers. If I do a restore, I'll lose everything. So u mean I have to automatically sync, lose everything and then restore my iPod to get my music and videos back? Im really confused.. :((
  • 29 wmayhem // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Well that sucked. I did the "restore" thing, blew away everything (again), left Manually manage.. and Sync only checked.. as OFF, and iTunes redownloaded the software update. Unfortunately it did not install the upgrade.
It looks like the computer you purchased your upgrade is the only computer you can use to sync and apply the upgrade.
I wont know for sure of course until I sit at my desk tomorrow morning, but hopefully it'll work, and wont have to contact Apple only to be on hold for an hour.
I'll you know how it turns out. Thanks for your post qiksand, it's nice to know I'm not the only one.
  • 30 notamacguyreally // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Can anyone confirm that this definitely works on Windows? I spent several wasted hours last night and only then noticed the tech specs made no mention of XP/Vista. I would really rather not format it for my Mac. Anyway, great way to alienate a core sector of your customers if Apple haven't done a simultaneous release....
  • 31 Jessica // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

i can't download January update. I keep gettting a "store busy" message.
  • 32 wmayhem // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

    Well it worked finally.
    A few notes:
It does in fact work for a PC. I'm running Win XP Home edition (at the office)
You MUST apply the 1.1.3 update first. I'm sure the software upgrade is in this update, and what you purchase is simply the license.
You must have the latest version of iTunes 7.6 (at least I'm pretty sure)
You need to use the same computer you purchased the upgrade from to apply it
You MUST have "Manually manage music & videos" unchecked (off)
And lastly, you MUST sync it to the computer which you purchased the software upgrade from. This means that if you were manually managing your music before, everything will be gone. All those countless hours getting your music set up just right, all the id tags, album covers, not to mention the copious amount of time downloading your music & videos, then adding them to your iPod. All gone.

The worst part of it all, at least for me, is that all those faithful blokes who picked up the iPod touch when it first came out and paid $450 for the 16 gb (at least thats what they were in Canada, before the American dollar bottomed out), are the same blokes Apple asked to complete a survey on "how to improve the iPod touch", are the same blokes that have to pay an additional $20 to get what is now being given for free to anyone who’s buying the product we helped (near demanded) to improve, which is now reduced in price ($450 to $400, $330, to $300). And here’s the kicker… oh yes boys and girls it gets worse. The upgrade is a major headache to install. All over, people are buying this software upgrade, which is overloading Apple’s servers to the point where you get a “busy signal” from iTunes and the iStore (they should probably switch to PC), and IF you are able to download this upgrade, you’ll inevitably have problems installing it, and if you want to talk to someone at Apple for technical support, you have to wait 48 hours for an email response, or have to pay (yes pay) for telephone support. If you purchased your iPod within 90 days, you are offered “complementary support”, but only 1 support ticket per iPod (better make a good one). If you purchased more than 90 (which move of us have), you’re S.O.L. Better luck on the forums!

Just when you think Apple couldn’t screw you any further, they do.
  • 33 Frank Fiaschetti // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Same problem, purchased the itouch update and received nothing. So far no response from Apple. I would advise not to purchase until the bugs are gone!
  • 34 Barry // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

What a pain and what a ripoff! I've already invested $400 in this thing and now I have to pay another $20 for the upgrade? And what's with the lack of instructions or warnings about doing this upgrade? So much for Apple's touted "User Friendliness". I have offically had it with Apple. They really do suck!
  • 35 iPodJezza // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I just keep getting the message "can't complete Itunes store request. There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try later". Does anyone else get this? I have been trying constantly since early yesterday with no success. I'm accessing this from the UK. Any thoughts or maybe work arounds would be gratefully recieved. Dying to get this update.
  • 36 Karyn March // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I have done the software upgrade but cannot find a buy it button to by the damm software -
  • 37 wmayhem // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Karyn, I had the same problem - couldnt see the "buy now button" from iTunes, just the same message "make sure you update your ipods firmware" or some such message. What it doesnt say, is that you also need to update your version of iTunes to 7.6.

iPodJezza , I did get that message, but I've been reading from several sources that because this upgrade is so new, and everyone is trying to get at it, it's overloading their crappy servers, so you may get "time out" errors, "server busy" errors or "try agains". I suggest either trying it again when its not at peak hours, or try again some time next week.

Couldnt agree more with you, Barry. Every time i tried to find answers, it lead me to one page or another, and when that didnt solve my problem, they gave me a link to the preceding page. Just constant circles. Their customer support is no better. In the end, I am happy with the new software, it should have been a free upgrade but you cant fight big business.

Frank, when you purchase that upgrade, you end up getting a very small file, so dont be surprised to see the download go by so fast, and see nothing happen.
You need to do the following to install the upgrade:

1 - Plug in your iPod touch to the computer you purchased your upgrade from.
2 - Open iTunes, and select your iPod touch.
3 - Get to the summary screen.
If you haven’t got the Software Version 1.1.3, click the “Check for Update” button on this screen and download the latest version.
You’re also going to need to get iTunes 7.6
Click the “Help” menu, and select “Check for Updates”. If you not running iTunes 7.6, it’ll tell you that a new version is available.

Once you updated your iPod software, and updated iTunes, you’ll need to restart your computer (at least on a PC, not sure about Macs)
    Repeat the first 3 steps.
4 - Make sure “Manually manage my music and videos” and “Sync only checked songs and videos” are both OFF (no checked)
If Manually manage my music and videos” was on, you’ll end up having to blow away everything on your ipod. Ya I know, sucks.
5 - Click Apply, then click Sync.

The very first thing it syncs is the software upgrade, but to be on the safe side, let the sync complete its process. Eject your iPod and verify that your software is installed. You’ll notice right away if it is, you should be seeing another 5 buttons on your home screen. If you don’t, I would make sure that you actually purchased your software to begin with.

    Hope that helps.

I dont even know how to download it, can someone give me a walkthrough on how to buy it?
  • 39 patrick // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I have gone through EVERY step in wmayhem's post, and still nothing! I have removed and reinstalled iTunes (7.6), I have restored the iPod (to a new iPod, not a backup). I have software 1.1.3, but no freakin' upgrade. On top of that, I can't seem to sync my calendar and contacts no matter what I do. They sync to my HTC TyTn II just fine, thank you very much. It seems to me that Apple rushed an upgrade out without proper testing. Anyway, still upgrade-less and frustrated...
  • 40 debbie_grbr // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I have a slightly different problem.

I was just given an iTouch and have the option to take it back within the next couple of days for a free upgrade or refund. I need to decide whether to keep it the way it is, get the free upgrade, or return it and pay a bit more for the new version, new one, but after reading this I'm not so sure that would even be a good idea. If the new iTouch has the same software that is giving everyone problems with the upgrade, then does it have problems too?

Does anybody here have the NEW ipod touch? Does it also have problems? And what's this about not being able to manually manage music and vidoes? Is that an ongoing problem? I have seen commments on another site that questioned whether the new Itouch update does not give you anything that is already available now as third party software.

    Any thoughts on this?

I'm going on 3 days trying to sort this crap out...and hating Apple more and more...I uploaded verson 1.1.3, and tried to buy the software update...but when I look on my itunes account information page, it shows one download that is pending, waiting to be downloaded. When I click the download button, nothing happens. I tried unchecking the "manually manage songs" button and then synched my ipod, only to be told that it couldn't successfully sync because my ipod doesn't have enough space for the entire contents of my itunes...Should I just kill myself now?

I had same problem - following steps fixed the problem. Firstly ensure you are on latest verion of ITunes and also the Ipod software for the Ipod Touch. Then you must ensure in ITunes that you have authorised your PC for purchases from ITunes. Once I did this it all installed fine.

This whole update is a joke. When I bought the update and tried (and failed) to install it, it managed to completely delete my whole itunes library. I was able to get it back, but of course it erases how many times you've listen to each song etc which is a shame.

I still haven't managed to install the upgrade. I am just trying the whole restore method to t ry and get it.

This is pathetic that we are struggling to do something which apple describes as simple.
  • 52 Gerry // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

It does work, you have to follow the steps in wmayhem's post to the letter. this is what i did. update TOUCH software to 1.1.3. then update itunes to 7.6. restart PC. aaabuy the january upgrade. connect your touch and it updates automatically.
  • 53 Tim // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

what do i do to download this update, my itunes is 7.6, and my ipod touch is 1.1.3, i go to itunes store click on the update and all i get is a psage saying what it does, at the bottom there is a button that says ok, i click it and it brings me back to the store. there is nothing else i can do!!
  • 54 jake // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I got a response from Apple that said, basically, "we know there's a problem and we'll send you another email when we figure out how to fix it." That was 2 days ago.

Meanwhile, the greedy ba$tards have my $20 that they're charging for the firmware upgrade.

Now I find out (from reading this thread, not from Apple) that in order to install this upgrade I have to uncheck Manual Synch, which basically means I am going to have to back after the "upgrade" and manually install the music that I want because an Auto Synch will screw everything up.

Wonderful. Terrific. Great job, Apple. Charge me $20 for a firmware update PLUS make it a huge hassle and inconvenience.

I tell you, why anyone thinks Apple is such a great friend of the consumer is absolutely beyond me.
  • 55 Sandi // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I tried everything mentioned and nothing worked. So I deleted and re-installed iTunes..even though I had the correct version. I restored the iPod touch, plugged it in and it immediately updated the software. Even Apple couldn't tell me this. VERY frustrating.

Apple have a problem at the moment (found out after I mailed support!) where you can't actually purchase the upgrade!!!

It just says OK rather than purchase or buy.

They do know about it, it's affecting multiple people and they are working on it!

do a Software Upgrade, make sure you have updated your iTouch and then buy the upgrade. Make sense?
  • 61 tombo // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

No. you actually cant purchase the stupid thing. When you click on buy now, or the ok button in the ipod store, it just redirects you back to the home page. theres no actuall way to purchase the product.
  • 62 JamesPope // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I'm having a HORRIBLE time trying to get this software. I can't even purchase it. I click the January Software button on the Itunes Store homepage, it brings me to a screen that tells me i must have version 7.6 itune, 1.1.3 ipod blah blah blah, then i click ok and it brings me right back to the itunes store home page. i dont even get a busy message.
  • 63 JamesPope // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Oh and just a quick question, if ive never had the "Manually manage music and videos" box checked off, but I've uploaded all my album art and edited all the artist names and whatnot, is that going to be effected. This was like 5 days of dreadful editing.
  • 64 Matt Woodward // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

James--it definitely won't affect album art and file metadata. I flipped this on and off to do this (and for other reasons at various times) and it only affects how it syncs with the iPod, not any of the data in iTunes itself.
  • 65 JamesPope // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

K thanks, other than that, I have phoned Apple and they couldn't tell me what the problem was (they said try restoring but that won't work). I have checked a number of forums, and people are now having the same problem I am, whereas they can't even purchase the update. So not only do early ipod touch buyers have to pay for software that is otherwise free to recent Touch buyers, we have to wait a seemingly longgggg time for them to get this working. I just want me GoogleMaps already!!

Would love to get the january software in my new Ipod Touch. Woops - I'm in Brazil and no payment methods work. Well, I guess I'll just have to go into hacking, jailbreaking, etc. Shame on Apple for limiting this customer's ability to buy software. But since the ipod touch is MINE, I BOUGHT IT, i feel it's in my right to use the device in its full potential.

hey hey, yeah i purchased it, it didnt work then i repurchased it and for some reason it did work...
i then emailed apple and they are going to refund me the money for the 1 that didnt work.
just incase u wanted it that badly and are prepared to lose $20 for a couple of days?

SUCCESS!!!!! ok everyone, if you're having the problem I was having, where you click on the january software update and just get routed back to the Itunes Store homepage (meaning you can't even purchase it) here's the solution. Copy this link into your browser:

    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=271872604&s=143441

This link (when put into Internet Explorer or Firefox) will open your itunes, and bring you to a different page to purchase the January Software Update. I have no clue why Apple couldnt tell me this info on the phone, but trust me, it worked, and I'm pleased to say that the WebApps are wicked as hell!! enjoy!

what a bummer, i have been following these steps to a "T" and I still get the unable to load update error.
    Itunes v7.6
    ipod touch v1.1.3
the 2 checkboxes are NOT checked as instructed.

tried restore many times, creating a new account everytime, but when it starts syncing, it craters with the error we all know and love.

    any ideas?

So, is it really true that Apple wants iPod touch to work only in countries
with iTunes stores? They won't have anything for everyone who resides in
Asia, LatAm or Africa? Has anyone got any response on this from Apple?

The same thing happened to me, you plug in your IPOD and since it is available, it will ask if you want to update. Click update and then follow the instructions.

  • 84 Sean Reilly // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Noil, check out JamesPope's message. I also couldn't find the "buy now" button that people are talking about but the URL in JamesPope's message gets you directly to the purchase page for the update.

JamesPope, thank you very much! Your post ended almost an hour of wasted time trying to figure out where I could actually purchase the update.
  • 85 Noil // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I have talked with apple on the phone and i found out two things. One the january software update has been removed from the itunes store and is impossible to buy or download again from apple. Two there is a july
software updaTE COMING OUT AND IT sounds like it will have the stuff in the january software update and more. I am so angry with apple for taking it down I bought it before then had to restart it and it got deleted and i got a new computer so i cant get it back on my ipod. I am trying to figure out a way though. Ill tell u if i find a way to get it on your ipod even if u never downloaded in the first place. I bet a genius bar or something like that may be able to put it on
