Rumors of my site's death have been greatly exaggerated, although, my old site is down I am in the process of attempting to get the database backup so that all the old posts can be restored.

Of course, this is just a temporary blog for the moment, and I shall be overwriting it and letting you all know what has happened.

Back online soon! I promise!

Tom Chiverton's Gravatar Reminds me of a scene from one too many films, mostly they go like this:

Evil person (to Hero):"Are you sure he wont remember any of this ?"
Doctor/surgeon/telepath/computer:"No, none of it"
Evil person punches Hero

:-)

@Mark, if you haven't been getting my emails about the server, I'm getting bouncebacks from Google as follows:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.
Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.
mark*****@gmail.com
(I added the asterisks to munge it)

and there is an attached text file, the contents of which read:

Final-Recipient: rfc822;mark*****@gmail.com
Action: delayed
Status: 4.0.0
Diagnostic-Code: smtp;450-4.2.1 The Gmail user you are trying to contact is receiving

Mark Drew's Gravatar Aha! Well, the real reason was that I managed to fill my gmail inbox, can you belive that?!?

There is some strangeness going on in my life, both with my sites and my work sites.

I am just waiting for cfeclipse.org to go down to be the cherry on the cake...

Mark Drew's Gravatar Well, my mailbox is now not full but I am getting LOTS of those messages from ewhosting!

I think I am being spammed to death!

Scott Krebs's Gravatar Can you check the headers of the messages to maybe see what is going on or send them to me? Is it possible to see what the original message was? The mail server doesn't have any mailboxes for your markdrew.co.uk domain set up to forward to your Gmail account (or anywhere else) so I'm not sure what's going on with that yet. The headers will tell the story, it's possible there's some spoofing going on or some other such mischief. Either that, or they're coming in through your website / server, being handed off to our mail servers which couldn't deliver them when your mailbox was full. We'll help you sort out what's going on for sure, but obviously we're not generating spam and loading you up with it for fun... ;) (evil laugh)

Scott Krebs's Gravatar Are they the same email that you forwarded me earlier? The one that appeared to be an error notification from rss.cfm? Basically, what's happening is when you switched your name servers, our nameservers still had the domain pointed at the shared server account we set up for you so long ago. That's my fault, I checked DNS Saturday afternoon after I got your emai about having to switch immediately because you were down and saw that we already had the domain set up with an IP that looked right. I should have logged in to your server and verified that IP was in fact correct, and if I was a regular tech support guy here I would have known to do that. Sorry, just trying to help out. Anyway, the code on the shared server was not ready for prime time and emailed you an error every time something tried to aggregate your blog (and that's quite a few according to the log files!). Also, according to the logs on that shared server traffic quieted down on Tuesday around midnight GMT. Some slow to update caching DNS servers let readers hit the shared site on Wednesday, but not many and by today it was just one hit.

The repeated error notification emails eventually filled up your Gmail account, the subsequent ones bounced and out mail servers are holding them to attempt delivery again later. The emails shouldn't live any longer than 18 hours, so this storm should be almost over.

So we can get a handle on the volume on the mail server, could you forward me the most recent one you've gotten? It will have the time associated with it so if it was generated close to the end of the day Tuesday then this is almost over. I also have one of our techs who is going to check the outgoing mail server to see if we can stop any further bounced messages from going out to your email address (I'm no PowerMTA guru or I'd do it). He's out and about and it's going to take him a few to get in front of a secure computer, but if we can stop them on the server that should stop it once and for all.

No mail loop, just a mail server trying to be courteous and make sure you get all your email. Seriously, sorry for the trouble.

Scott Krebs's Gravatar To clarify, it's after 9pm here and the PMTA servers are mean beasts that never give us any trouble, so it's safe to let the guru out to play in the evening. ;) That said, he found 222 messages left in there and killed them, he's rerunning a scan on the spool but he thinks they're all gone now. The storm of rss.cfm should be over for you...

Mark Drew's Gravatar I removed the files from the FTP server (the one that had coldfusing.com on). I think these are different servers and I jsut got RSS'd to hell and back.

Mark Drew's Gravatar Thanks to Scott at Edge Web Hosting, all of this has been sorted. Some rogue server decided to use the wrong IP, that of a server I had half-setup with blogcfc, to get RSS feeds, of course, this was happening every second or so, and I got blasted with the error messages (as I should, there should be no errors on my site, and if there are, I should be notified!) and thus my email brought down.

I blamed EdgeWeb Servers, but alas, they were doing their damn job! dammit! And a good job they were doing!

So, finally, all sorted, and many thanks to Scott at edge web hosting for doing it!
