ColdFusion is Dead

... apparently, at least according to this article

Did I miss something? I have just hired 2 CF developers, we have more work that we can take on, and I get daily approaches from head hunters offering me jobs in the field, is that a dead technology if the market is on the way up?

I also happen to have other technologies on my CV (.net, php etc) and I haven't got any requests for those, well, perhaps a couple but not at the same level as CF work!

Andy J's Gravatar Once again a journalist gets paid for writing an article they know nothing about and won't bother to research.

Mark Drew's Gravatar I posted this this morning, before realising that everyone else had blogged it.

Thinking about it, I might delete this. Dont want google indexing this.

Gary Fenton's Gravatar I used to write/edit IT magazines (real ones, not e-zines) and that article is what I'd call a page filler. "We're a bit short on content so let's get someone to write a top ten list". I'm sure it took Mary Brandel all of 2 minutes to research. I'm not saying she's totally wrong but she's not accurate and is being rather harsh without substantiating her claims. (Journalists don't need to substantiate things, it comes under the creative license get-out clause. ;-)) I've also got lots of CF work to do but there isn't a bustling market place for CF like there used to be - there's less wind in its sails. The product is still brilliant (even more so with CF8) but like Macromedia, Adobe aren't marketing it. You've got to ask why. I'm not just talking about adverts but whenever they sell a dozen Dreamweaver licenses to a corporate or government they need to sell them on Coldfusion too - give them a free copy of Std and a 1 page starter guide showing a novice how to present data from their db on a website in just 6 lines of code. Or a quick-start video. That sort of thing. Then they need to address the other end of the spectrum, kids and students who want to get into website development. They are the programmers of tomorrow, the people who will be building the next generation of websites for millions of businesses. Get them hooked on CF now - for free - because they sure as hell won't pay for it.

Perhaps by coincidence Dale Fraser has just posted a top 5 list of what CF needs to survive. CF Std being made free is one of them http://dalefraser.blogspot.com/2007/05/what-coldfu...

Nick Tong's Gravatar not if this is anything to go by: http://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/jobs/uk/coldfusion%20...

Gary Fenton's Gravatar That's a good link, Nick, but what it doesn't say is if all of those positions were filled and if they were related to supporting legacy applications. If there are less new CF developers around then the demand for supporting legacy apps could increase.

Phillip Senn's Gravatar One shouldn't look at anecdotal evidence and make far-reaching conclusions.
What if a company were in the business of selling buggy whips at the turn of the century?
Their sales could have been increasing, but it wouldn't have negated the fact that buggy whips were going to soon be a thing of the past.

David's Gravatar Maybe they're referring to the pending Scorpio release...

ColdFusion is dead. Long live ColdFusion

ziggy's Gravatar Gary, your post is spot on. MM and Adobe have done a terrible job with a great technology.

Also, if people are getting CF offers it could well be because there are fewer people entering/doing CF, so more jobs for fewer people. When I see photos from CF conferences, the people look old. Well, older... ;-)

Mark Drew's Gravatar Well, depends on the conferences to be honest, cfObjective had a lot of "oldies" I guess (Apart from Derek P!).

I think its a great time, Adobe has been marketing the hell out of CF8 to the developers (hey, it isnt released yet, who else are you going to market it to?) and I presume there will be a lot more marketing after it has been released

At the end of the day, I dont think anyone can expect adverts in the tube for CF ... can you?

Tero Pikala's Gravatar At least CF isn't doing that well on TIOBE index (http://www.tiobe.com/tpci.htm)

I think that any CF programmer who isn't actively learning other technologies should consider his approach immediately - just keep in mind old saying about hammer and nails.

Radek's Gravatar ColdFusion is alive again! Check labs to get latest beta :)

Mark Drew's Gravatar Tero, the TIOBE index really is showing programming languages, in my mind, ColdFusion is a Java Application Server of sorts, and thus is also at number 1 :)

But I agree, any developer should learn other programming languages.
