CFEclipse, taking a break

July 27, 2007 ·

I just thought I would post this before people started getting worried about advances in CFEclipse over the next month or so. I have decided to do the Spanish thing and take August off. I have been working very hard in the lead up to the "conference season" as well as releasing a number of features in the meantime, on top of which I have had a very busy time at work which is actually leaving me grumpy most of the time. I dont want to loose interest in the project and I think a month apart will probably be good, as they say "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" and all that. So, this weekend I shall try and squash a couple of bugs and maybe get a release out next week and then take a break until September. I might even get good at flying now that I got Microsoft Flight Simulator!

Want me to present at your CFUG or meeting?

July 23, 2007 ·

Do you need someone to present at your CFUG? Well, I have been doing a lot of presentations lately, which can be seen over in my Presentations page, which means I have a lot of content I can present on. If you have a specific topic (including CFEclipse of course!) Why not email me with your proposal and I shall see what I can do. I am based in London, England so unless there is a nice budget to fly me out, I can also do remote presentations using Adobe Connect. I am available in the evenings mostly so let me know if you ever need an extra presenter at your CFUG or company.

New CFEclipse mailing lists

July 16, 2007 ·

Following Charlie Arehart's great list of CFEclipse blogs and resources, I thought I would mention to the world at large the new (and old) mailing lists that are available for CFEclipsers.
  • CFEclipse Users: This is the main place to ask questions and provide support to people using CFEclipse
  • CFEclipse Developers: This is for developers that are writing or want to write code for CFEclipse itself.
  • CFEclipse Testers: This is a closed group for people that want to regularly test features of CFEclipse. Joining this group means you want to actively be a tester, so no support questions, but submissions of test results etc.
  • And finally, CFEclipse SnipEx: This is a group for developers of SnipEx services. If you like SnipEx and want to talk about how to code it or integrate it, here is the place to go to.
EDIT: I forgot to mention the House of Fusion's General CFEclipse mailing list! If you are still subscribed to a group in tigris.org, then you shall soon be unsubscribed as those groups will be deleted soon.

Vote for CFEclipse!

July 13, 2007 ·

I noticed, that even though our blurb a while back for the CFEclipse project said it was one of the top rated plugins on http://www.eclipseplugincentral.com/, our rating has dropped quite a lot. To stop this tragic state of affairs, I wonder if user's of CFEclipse would mind voting on it at the following sites: http://www.eclipseplugincentral.com/ and http://www.ohloh.net/ It would be great to give it a good ranking wouldn't it? (just a suggestion you understand)

All you have to do is leave a comment with the email you want me to send it to (dont worry your email isnt public here) and the first 4 that message me will get one! (after that, if your name is on the comments, I shall send you one) Also, say what you have done to help CFEclipse or the CFEclipse community, best answer will get it first :)

CFEclipse Bloggers Gallore!

July 11, 2007 ·

Charlie Arehart has posted a couple of great lists of CFEclipse bloggers out there. I am amazed at the number of people blogging about it to be honest. So now, if you are getting started you can read about other people's experiences, tips and thoughts. As a side note, I should say that CFEclipse has got a wiki, and there is even a link from the front page now, so if you have other questions they are likely to be answered there. A big thanks has to go to Andy Jarrett and Jim Priest for keeping it up to date! They are officially the Wiki Documentation Team of the CFEclipse Project, so I would like to welcome them to the CFEclipse Crew!

CFEclipse's SnipEx server components released

July 11, 2007 ·

After a busy few months in conferences I can finally get back to tidying stuff off my desk. So to start the ball rolling, I have released to RiaForge the server components for the SnipEx functionality in CFEclipse. Its a pretty simple setup, 2 tables and 2 CFC's that make up the whole application. Once you have created the tables, just create a new entry in the lib table that defines your server, and then add any libraries you want to add (they are children of the root and you can make tree sets like this) and then start adding your snippets. It should be pretty well documented as a server. To attach your server in CFEclipse, open the Snippets View, then click on the down arrow at the top of the view and click "Edit SnipEx Servers" and enter the URL to the SnipEx.cfc I have also checked in the code into RiaForge so if you need to send me any patches just check out the code into CFEclipse from SVN. Oh, and this is my little pressie to you all on my birthday!

Eclipse, ColdFusion and Mark Drew, Synchronised?

July 09, 2007 ·

A little twitter message from Kev got me thinking about something totally unrelated really, but it might explain a few things. Let me fill you in with a few facts first:
  • Eclipse just released version 3.3. Last year, at the same time, they released 3.2 and the year before that 3.1
  • Adobe's ColdFusion going to be 12 years old tomorrow (10th of July)
  • I am going to be 33 on the 11th of July
Take all these facts together and you start seeing a pattern! I share (nearly) a birthday with a technology I love. I work on CFEclipse which is built on the Eclipse platform, which releases a version for the last 3 years that matches my age, within two weeks of my birthday, hmm... this is real synchronicity at work here don't you think? Anyway, Happy (Early) Birthday ColdFusion, may Adobe keep releasing great software for many years to come! (just as a thought exercise, do you think they will release CF tomorrow???)

CFEclipse Jobs: Test and QA Manager Required

July 05, 2007 ·

As the CFEclipse project grows, both in terms of features and number of users, I would like to "hire" someone that will be in charge of the testing and QA group. This role would not take a lot of your time, maybe a couple of hours a week, maybe more if a lot of features are going in. The tasks that would go to the Test and QA Manager would be:
  • Manage the Test Team Members, assigning areas that they are responsible for, and tests they will run/carry out on CFEclipse
  • Log bugs as required, close bugs that are not relevant, using the reports produced by the Test Team Members
  • Highlight any areas requiring attention and monitor user mailing lists for errors that need to be included in the Test Team's standard tests
  • Implement whatever tools/technologies are deemed fit to carry out these roles
As you can tell, this role would be more of a management role, and to aid the Test and QA Manager I am sure there will be job openings coming up soon (as soon as we have hired the TQM). The remuneration of the role would be to officially become a member of the CFEclipse Crew, and your photo and bio be added to the CFEclipse website. To apply for this role, send me an , saying what you think you can bring to this role, and how much time you can devote to this task. P.S. in case you are an agency, before you start calling me, this is a volunteer role and there is no money involved.

CFEclipse 1.3.1.5, now for Eclipse 3.3

July 04, 2007 ·

How is that for a version number frenzy? I have just put CFEclipse 1.3.1.5 up on the update site (http://www.cfeclipse.org/update) which you should have in your Eclipse Update sites. Give it a whirl, it should now work nicely (or as much as I can test) with Eclipse 3.3 With testing in mind, I wonder how many people would be up for being testers of each release? A tester would have a set number of features to test for each version/operating system, and would make my job of hunting down bugs a lot easier! Anyway, have fun! And happy Fourth of July! (how to release something when its quiet eh?)
